Developing a Private-Label Scented Candle Range

From a concept to a manufacturable specification

An international customer approached Welburn to develop a private-label scented candle range. The customer had a broad idea of the fragrances, product positioning and overall appearance they wanted, but some of the product details still needed to be worked through before the range could move into production — a fairly common starting point with private-label enquiries.

About the Client

An international customer with a concept, not yet a finished specification

Some private-label customers approach us with complete specifications; others, like this one, have a concept, reference products or preferred fragrances and need support converting these into a manufacturable product.

The Challenge

Turning a broad brief into a working product

01 — Converting a concept into a manufacturable product. Fragrance direction, positioning and appearance were defined in broad terms, but candle size, vessel, wax fill and packaging still needed to be worked through.

02 — Balancing fragrance with construction. The fragrance is only one part of a scented candle — the wax, fragrance loading, vessel diameter and wick all need to work together.

03 — Aligning packaging with volume expectations. Custom jars, lids, printed packaging and specially developed fragrances can carry different minimum order quantities, which need to make commercial sense for the project.

Our Approach

Understand, develop, test, refine

01 — Understanding the brief. We first discussed the basic product requirements including candle size, vessel, wax fill, fragrance direction, packaging and expected order quantities.

02 — Fragrance selection. The fragrance brief was shared with our fragrance partners to identify suitable options. Depending on the requirement, customers can select from existing fragrance options or explore customised fragrances, with minimum quantities and development timelines factored in for custom development.

03 — Developing the candle. Once fragrance options were shortlisted, candle samples were prepared for evaluation. Our team conducted burn trials and made adjustments where required before finalising the proposed construction. The customer evaluated samples for fragrance, appearance and overall product feel and shared feedback with us.

04 — Packaging and commercial alignment. In parallel, packaging options were discussed — ranging from relatively simple labels and cartons to more customised packaging. Where possible, existing components were considered for customers looking to start with smaller quantities.

The Outcome

A finalised specification, ready for production

Following the sampling and evaluation process, the customer was able to finalise a scented candle specification suitable for private-label production. The project followed the same practical process we use for many customised enquiries: understand the concept, check feasibility, develop samples, test the candle, incorporate customer feedback and then move towards commercial production once the specifications are agreed.
